TOP DROP August 2020

We have searched high and low this month for great beers that have taken inspiration from the king himself, Elvis, through to Jedis from the outer galaxy, Norwegian bearded seals and even cake from Germany. Please enjoy, we did.

BEARDED SEAL DDH HAZY IPA
Hop Nation Brewing Co
I just got punched in the face by a Bearded Seal and I loved it so much! What an absolute ripper flipper. An 8% ABV double-hopped IPA and not the slightest aftertaste of alcohol that you sometimes get from the heavier IPAs. So silky smooth and true to its said aroma and flavour profile of mango, passionfruit and pineapple. Fantastic dry bitter finish too! Brewed in collaboration with Lervig, an independently owned and operated craft brewery located in Stavanger, Norway. It will have you imagining you’re Ragnar Lothbrok after a few. Skoll!

JAPANESE LAGER
Heads of Noosa
What a class drop. It captures the essence of Japanese style lagers that so many outside of the Land of the Rising Sun have failed to achieve. Using around 30 percent rice in their recipe, they have created a dry crisp lager that’s sweet on the nose and lean and clean in the mouth. Exceptional. Just grabbed a six pack.

PACIFIC ALE
4 Pines Brewing Co
Not too bad on the flavour profile albeit a little bit watery. With that said, in fairness I didn’t initially realise I had purchased a mid-strength. So, all things considered, it’s quite good. Light bodied with a sweet citrus and passionfruit flavour profile.

HANDSOME ELVIS NITRO MILK STOUT
Balter Brewing Company
Said to enhance sideburn growth this beer is certainly sweet and velvety as it claims. It’s deceptively thin, solid dark chocolate in colour with soft espresso crema head. Chocolate milk and restrained espresso notes delivering just the right amount of bitterness. It’s as delicate as the sequins on Elvis’s jumpsuit. Now drop the knee and give us a roundhouse swinging arm Elvis salute. “Thank you very much.”

KORBEN D. DOUBLE IPA
Akasha Brewing Co
There are beers that knock your socks off that have you thinking, ‘what the hell is that and how good is it’ and those that are simply enjoyable. This is a nice double IPA but it won’t stop you in your tracks. Well balanced taste of malt fruit spice, citrus  and pine with a resinous mouthfeel.

BLACK AS YOUR HEART IPA
Aether Brewing
Creamy head, good carbonation and extremely well balanced between the malt and hops. It starts as an IPA and transforms on your palate to a black ale. Aether say they’re the craft beer alchemists and this beer is proof of their claim. Beautiful. This beer will make you wish winter lasted all year long.

CAKE HOLE BLACK FOREST STOUT
Moon Dog Craft Brewery
This is a true liquid version of a gooey, alcohol laden Black Forest cake. Fudgey chocolate, sour cherries and rum whipped together in a thick stout with a roasty bitterness. Yum! This is definitely one to get into your cake hole in my opinion.

J-JUICE NEW ENGLAND IPA

Hop Nation Brewing Co.
Pours like pineapple juice with a semi-fruity and zesty taste of orange, grapefruit and pine balanced with light malts. Quite sweet with just a touch of bitterness and a slightly dry, resinous mouthfeel.
