Four Cairns hotels have been recognised as Water Intelligence Pioneers 2026, following their participation in early WaterAlive pilots exploring how operational data can help hotels better understand and manage water performance.
The recognition particularly acknowledges the Facilities Teams behind the participating hotels, whose involvement demonstrated how the hotel sector can move from retrospective water management towards proactive, data-driven decision-making.
Making Water More Visible — Without New Hardware
Hotels are complex water users. Guest rooms, kitchens, laundries, cooling towers, swimming pools, irrigation and cleaning all contribute to demand, while occupancy and operating conditions vary daily.
Importantly, the participating hotels did not need to install smart water meters or new monitoring hardware to get started.
Instead, the pilots demonstrated how hotels can generate useful Water Intelligence from data they already have, including readings from existing main water meters and sub-meters, combined with operational information such as occupancy.
This lowers an important barrier for facilities seeking better water visibility. Rather than waiting for investment in automated metering, hotels can start understanding water performance today and incorporate smart-meter data later if it becomes available.
The WaterAlive pilots explored a simple question:
How much water should this hotel be using given its level of operation?
By analysing consumption alongside operational information, Facilities Teams can establish normal water-use patterns and identify days when performance warrants investigation.
This moves the conversation beyond “How much water did we use?” towards “Is today’s water use normal for the way our hotel is operating?”
Recognising the People Behind Water Intelligence
The Water Intelligence Pioneer recognition acknowledges hotels and facilities professionals willing to explore this emerging approach.
It is not an award for achieving a particular consumption target. Instead, it recognises leadership in using existing data to create greater visibility of water as a business and environmental resource.

Building reliable water-performance information continuously can also help facilities prepare for NABERS Water assessment and provide stronger evidence for ESG and sustainability reporting, rather than reconstructing the story of water performance retrospectively.
The participating Cairns hotels have provided an important opportunity to explore Water Intelligence in real hotel environments—and demonstrate that smarter water management does not necessarily have to begin with new hardware.
Their participation demonstrates how Facilities Teams can lead the transition from periodic water reporting towards continuous operational intelligence.
