EXTENSION OF THE RELAXATION ON THE REQUIREMENT TO LOCK EGM DOORS – TO MAY 2025
In November 2022, QHA representations resulted in a 12-month trial to allow licensees to leave EGM doors open after removing banknote acceptors and/or coin receptacles for storage in a secure location on the premises. This practice was put forward to OLGR as a means of reducing damage to, and theft from EGMs, and staff safety, by providing a visual indication no money is in the EGM at the end of the trading day.
The 12-month trial which expired on 30 November 2023 has proven successful. This trial has been extended under a Statement of Regulatory Intent until May 2025.
Gaming Machine Regulation 2002
Statement of Regulatory Intent – Security of doors on Electronic Gaming Machines
Summary
This statement of regulatory intent relates to the requirement under the Gaming Machine Regulation 2002 (the Regulation) to secure the door of an Electronic Gaming Machine (‘EGM’).
It is intended the requirement will not be enforced in stated circumstances for a period of 18 months from 1 December 2023 to 31 May 2025 for hotel and club gaming licensees.
Regulatory intent and associated reasons
Section 27 of the Regulation requires a person who unlocks or opens the door of an EGM to lock or securely close the door before leaving the EGM or completing the purpose for unlocking or opening the door. During this further trial period and subject to OLGR issued guidance, licensees will be permitted outside of trading periods to leave EGM doors open and remove banknote acceptors and/or coin receptacles for storage in a secure location on the premises.
The outcome of this further trial will allow for confirmation of what arrangements need to occur in order to permanently amend the Regulation.
