TOP DROP MAY 2020

Top Drop May 2020 looks at eight easy drinking beers that are sure to put smiles on your customers' dials. .

XPA
Coopers Brewery
Before the rise of boutique breweries, Coopers Pale Ale and Sparkling Ale were some of my favourite beers to drink. Nowadays I am a little more adventurous and like beers with a bit more bite in the bitterness stakes. So, I wasn’t exactly sure what I would think of Coopers XPA offering. Well, what I can say is that this beer is a phenomenal drop. It has that beautiful flavour synonymous with Coopers, with just a little added punch.

LITTLE SMITH IPA
Akasha Brewing Company
Resin and pine nose flow through to a hit of the same straight up, followed by notes of pineapple, stone fruit and toffee caramel. Thoroughly enjoyed this IPA. Smooth, clean and crisp with a medium length finish, it hit the spot on a Friday afternoon.

HIGHTAIL ALE
Mountain Goat Beer
Being a big fan of Mountain Goat’s beers, I was looking forward to this one but it was sadly a little pedestrian. It wasn’t terrible but provided nothing out of the ordinary to talk about. Moderate malt body, hints of toffee with mild citrus and raisin notes.

PASSION VICTIM SUMMER ALE
Two Birds Brewing
If you can recall Pasito soft drink, that recollection will give you a decent indication of what this beer tastes like. I can’t say I am a huge fan of these style of beers but as far as this category goes, this is one of the best ones I have tried.

NZ PALE ALE
Brouhaha Brewery
It’s said to possess a tropical zesty nose with a gentle bitterness that balances well with the smooth malt backbone. Well, it’s certainly a nice, easy drinking beer that's for sure. With that said, it is best described as a very subdued pale ale. Crisp and dry with a ever so slight grapefruit finish.

SEND IT SESSION ALE
Black Hops Brewery
Brewed with Australian pale malted barley and wheat and lightly hopped, this is yet another cracker from Black Hops. Sublime. Light, slight bitterness and super refreshing. They can do no wrong. It is not hit and miss with Black Hops. One of the best breweries going around at present for sure.

DREAMFEED HAZY IPA
Hop Nation Brewery
A very smooth beer from start to finish and yet another impressive drop from Hop Nation. Densely hazy, there is layer upon layer of hop flavour resulting in bursts of tropical fruit with a good dose of bitterness. It’s juicy and just what you need to sink your teeth into over the weekend.

QUIET DEEDS FULL DISCLOSURE IPA
Deeds Brewing
Said to be a mix of citrus fruit with hints of white wine character and gooseberry thanks to the combination of German and American hops. Whatever the folks have done at Deeds Brewing in Glen Iris Victoria, it works. It is a very enjoyable IPA that’s not overly bitter and is indeed a good introduction for those venturing into this craft beer world for the first time.
