The Petroleum and Gas Inspectorate would like to remind business owners, chefs and commercial kitchen staff to be careful when turning gas supplies back on and re-lighting gas appliances. Please find below some helpful information for your members.

As COVID-19 restrictions begin to ease in Queensland, it’s important that hospitality businesses ensure their premises are safe to reopen to the public.

Gas appliances may be adversely affected by having been turned off for longer periods of time than normal, especially where kitchens may have been ‘deep cleaned’ or where other trades have been in to conduct building maintenance or decorating.

Things to consider:

Was the gas supply off at the meter or LP Gas cylinder?

  • Make sure ALL gas appliances are turned off before you turn the gas back on.
  • If you smell gas after you turn the supply on, turn off immediately and contact a gas work licence holder.

Has any work (building maintenance or decorating) been undertaken while not using the appliances? Or were any appliances returned to lease companies during the closure?

  • Make sure no one has disconnected or moved a gas appliance.
  • If gas appliances are disconnected or have been moved confirm the work was done by a gas work licence holder – there should be a Gas System Compliance Certificate
  • If you smell gas after you turn the supply on, turn off immediately and contact a gas work licence holder.

When you turn the gas appliances on:

Use the appliance instructions to light any/all pilot lights

  • If the pilot doesn’t light, or goes out when you let the button go, DO NOT try to fix it, turn off immediately and contact a gas work licence holder to undertake repairs.

Make sure all the burners light and the flames look normal

  • Burners can become blocked or partially blocked, if not possible to clean as normal, turn off immediately and contact a gas work licence holder to undertake repairs.

Monitor the operation of the appliance to check all is okay

  • Appliances may light and turn on, but thermostats may not work normally, or airways and flue ways may not work correctly. If the appliance doesn’t work normally, turn off immediately and contact a gas work licence holder to undertake repairs.

Contact a gas work licence holder to service and repair any faulty gas appliances.
