Treasurer Cameron Dick has confirmed the application deadline for the Palaszczuk Government’s land tax rebate will be extended for a further four months to help COVID-affected Queensland businesses Unite and Recovery for Queensland jobs.

The Treasurer said the decision was made after consultation with the Property Council of Australia.

“We know that businesses around the world continue to face turmoil and uncertainty as a result of COVID-19,” the Treasurer said.

“The Palaszczuk Government has a plan for Queensland’s economic recovery.

“As restrictions ease further in the week ahead, we know more businesses can look forward to increasing their trade, but for many small businesses the road ahead remains very challenging.

“In order to enable landlords to better support their tenants, keeping businesses trading and supporting Queensland jobs, we will extend the rebate application deadline to 31 October 2020.

“This will give landowners more time to finalise relief agreements with their tenants and apply for the rebate.”

Queensland Executive Director of the Property Council Chris Mountford said that the extension is a sensible decision that will support both landlords and impacted tenants as they continue to navigate the challenges brought by COVID-19.

“This relief is important as it increases the capacity of a landlord to support tenants that have been adversely affected, taking pressure off their cash flow at this critical time,” Mr Mountford said.

The Palaszczuk Government moved quickly to implement COVID-19 land tax relief to support landowners and their tenants through the COVID-19 pandemic in response to National Cabinet decisions.

Since that announcement, more than $91 million has been approved in land tax relief, benefiting around 7000 taxpayers.

The 31 October 2020 application deadline aligns with arrangements in other jurisdictions, including New South Wales.
